The details from yesterday's raid at a dog fighting operation allegedly run out of a daycare center in suburban Maywood are stomach turning.
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart held a news conference this morning and detailed the horrific conditions in which the animals were found.
One dog had a broken leg and another had badly chewed hind legs. A month-old puppy was missing an eye after it was apparently used as bait to train older dogs. All the dogs were emaciated.
Nine dogs total were rescued. Five of the dogs are adults and four are pups, with three being just a month old. The dogs are being cared for at the Animal Welfare League in Park Ridge.
Dart said when authorities raided the home a 2101 S. Third Avenue, children were playing on a swing set just ten feet away from one of the fighting dogs.
Other dogs were found in a nearby garage at 2025 South Sixth Avenue in Maywood in the care of an ex-convict who Dart says charged $60 a month for "kennel" fees.
The daycare operator told the sheriff's department she is not involved in dog fighting and the ten children who were in her care were never in danger.

May these poor innocents find peace, love and compassion and wonderfully loving homes. And God bless their rescuers and caretakers.
Very well said.
OK... Should I care? Is this news?
I wish they would castrate those responsible with rusty scissors! My concern for another humnan being goes out the window when I read what cruelties they are capable of, specially when the victims really have no way to defend themselves or know any better
David: It isn't "news" if you've paid attention to how often it happens (and how often people are easily forgiven for such twisted acts -- Michael Vick and his being reinstated into the NFL is a prime case in point -- and putting him back into a situation where his violent nature will be rewarded is beyond the pale). But if you're concerned about violence in society, then, yes, it is news: because people who commit violent acts on other humans (rape, assualt, murder) often begin by doing so to animals. So even if you don't have enough empathy and intelligence to see the absolute horror in such acts, one would hope you can at least connect the dots to see where it will all lead. And (to paraphrase Mr. Cronkite), that's the way it is.
