Update: Driver dies in Disney World monorail crash on Epcot line, video captures the aftermath

As I reported early this morning, a monorail driver died in a 2 a.m. crash at the Ticket and Transportation Center when the purple and pink monorails collided. Austin Wuennenberg, 21, was trapped in the cab and killed, the first fatality in 38 years of monorail operation.

Unconfirmed reports say that one of the monorails may have been backing up, not realizing that there was another train behind it. If this is the case, the pink monorail would have backed up into the purple one, driven by Wuennenberg. Because the collision system is normally disabled during track switching, which is what pink would have been trying to do, there would have been no warning.
