Update: Cleveland dog fighting case – how you can help

Continued from: Update: Cleveland dog fighting case - "Hope for the  27"

Volunteers are still needed every day at the Cleveland City Kennel to walk the remaining ten dogs from the 27, as well as the kennel’s other urgent and adoptable dogs. The Kennel is open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm.  Please call the kennel if you can help at: 216-664-3187 or email Julie: juliemaykono@gmail.com orLauren lnsammon@gmail.com.

The kennel is collecting funds that will help with medical expenses as well as basic health needs such as heartworm tests, Rabies shots and spay/neuters.  Three of the 27 dogs have had to have emergency surgery. You can donate any amount; every bit helps. If you donate $300 or more, you will have naming rights to the dog of your choice (granted it is not already named).

One of the dogs that had surgery is now in foster care with Chris Hughes at Rowdy to the Rescue, a North Ridgeville 501c3 non-profit.  Lola, (formerly K119), is doing well after being treated by the Family Pet Clinic in Garfield Heights. Shelby Walchanowicz, one of their vet techs, was volunteering at the kennel and noticed K119  had some genital swelling. The Family Pet Clinic treated Lola for Vaginal Hyperplasia and spayed her. Family Pet took care of Lola for a week before she went into foster care with Hughes.  You can see how well Lola is doing by clicking on the video accompanying this article.

The other two dogs still in vet care are at the APL.

Ten of the dogs are still waiting for rescues or fosters. If you can foster one of them in your home, please contact Julie at the email address above.

The Cleveland City Kennel also posts their Urgent dogs of the week (not the 27) on their Facebook webpage-Cleveland Animal Control. Every dog that enters the kennel is held a minimum of 72 business hours (longer for dogs with tags, a microchip, or abandoned).  Some dogs from the City Kennel are sent to the APL or the Cuyahoga County Kennel.  The remaining dogs are in need of rescue in order to be able to leave the kennel.  The kennel will work with local and out of state rescues.

Since September, about 100 dogs have been saved from the Cleveland City Kennel that otherwise would not have made it out. They are always in need of volunteers for assistance with transports, fosters, and sponsors.
