This is an update to an article posted a few weeks ago, "Historic Newspapers Online." In the article, I mentioned the Chronicling America project from the Library of Congress, and that the years 1900-1910 were then currently available.
The project has recently updated its digital holdings, to bring the entire project back on schedule. Now available are all of the newspapers from 1880-1922. This is a crucial time period for newspaper research, as many Civil War veterans and freedmen died within this time period.
Furthermore, with the missing 1890 federal census, these newspapers can help to provide information otherwise unavailable.
The following states are available:
- California
- District of Columbia
- Florida
- Hawaii
- Kentucky
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New York
- Texas
- Utah
- Virginia
You can search individual newspapers or states, narrow the search by date, and look for keywords or phrases. The image viewer will highlight your keywords, so that you can easily find the pertinent article.
Also, though I neglected to mention it in my previous article, the Chronicling America site also allows you to search the complete directory for all newspapers available in the Library of Congress's extensive collections.
The project plans to have all of the newspapers from 1860-1922 for these few states available free online by next year. By 2011, the Library of Congress promises to have newspapers available online from 1836-1922.
Also, if your state of interest is unavailable yet, try one of the larger newspapers, which sometimes run national news stories, obituaries, etc. They also generally cover the news of neighboring states and counties.
