Beatles artist Shannon MacDonald has been keeping a close eye on information about the fire Thursday at the Hard Day's Night Hotel in Liverpool because over 100 of her paintings are featured there. And the news does not appear to be good, she told Beatles Examiner.
“I've heard that especially the two suites (Lennon and McCartney) and I know that there's at least two paintings in the Paul McCartney suite, where the fire actually, from what I understand, started (that are damaged).”
She says it's her understanding the fire started on the roof. “That's how the fire was brought down into that suite. Then from just water alone, I understand the Lennon suite was damaged, too.”
She said at least four of her paintings were in the Lennon suite, so, she said, “we're talking about six or seven paintings that may have been damaged.”
“I've heard there were about 10 rooms damaged, not by the fire, but by water trying to put the fire out.” She said she's hoping at some point to get photos that show the damage inside the hotel.
She is also waiting to hear directly from the hotel. “I heard from the Cavern Club,” she said. She also said Liverpool Beatles fan Donna Jackson had also been in contact with updates.
According to her website, the Hard Day's Night Hotel featured more than 110 of her paintings. (You can see some of the photos that were in the suites damaged by the fire in the slide show.)
"My first reaction was, I'm glad no one was hurt. Then you start to think…12 years! All that work! You can paint it again, but it's never like the first," she said.
Mike Dewey, the hotel's general manager, told Click Liverpool, "Both the hotel's staff and Merseyside Fire Service worked in partnership to make sure everyone was taken to safety within 10 minutes and no one was hurt or injured. The cause of the fire is not yet known and we are unable to report anymore at this time."
He told the site the hotel will be closed for the next 24 hours to inspect the building.
