There is a new trend in furniture and décor. It is called Upcycling. Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. (Wikipedia definition)
There is a strong push in vendors that are turning trash in to treasures. Here in Amarillo there are many shops specializing in this type of merchandise. There is even an expo that will be held at the Amarillo Civic Center featuring these types of work. It is called the Ruffles and Rust Expo to be held on September 14, 2013.
Locally there is a charity that is creating these pieces to sell. Pass It On Amarillo is taking in used furniture and giving it a new life. Once completed, the items are sold to raise money for local charities and churches. Many of their items can be found on their Facebook page by clicking on their name above.
Examples of an upcycled item would be:
- Chest of drawers turned into a bench
- Entertainment center converted to kid's kitchen
- Rolling microwave cart turned into a tea cart or bar
- Shutters turned into a room divider
- Console TV cabinet turned into stylish dog bed
If you have an old piece of furniture collecting dust or maybe it is broken and you don't have the time or energy to repair it, consider donating it for a charity.
