While searching for the perfect holiday gift this season, consider an eco-friendly gift from Hipcycle upcycled products. From jewelry to housewares to clothing and accessories, a green gift is the right touch for any earth friendly advocate.
Hipcycle products are attractive, durable, and priced fairly, compared to similar mainstream items.
Hipcycle seeks to harness the power of business to make the world a better place. As a for-profit company, their mission is to help address the global waste problem through upcycling. We search for the best in upcycled products from some of the world’s most creative small businesses and offer them all in one place.
Consumers and green believers shouldn’t have to compromise when choosing to live more sustainably. Hipcycle makes eco-friendly purchasing decisions easier. They offer a multitude of goods that satisfy the need for beautiful home decor while also helping the environment.
What is upcycling?
Upcycling is the process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful. For example:
Unraveling a wire clothes hanger to break into your car to rescue your keys is not upcycling, but stretching out a wire clothes hanger then tying strips of a plastic bag around it to make a wreath is upcycling!
Upcycling gives an item a better purpose. And while jimmying the lock on your car to get in is giving that hanger a new purpose, it’s not necessarily better or more beautiful. And the mangled hanger is likely destined for the trash, which is the opposite intent of upcycling.
Recycling vs. Upcycling
Recycling takes consumer materials — mostly plastic, paper, metal, and glass — and breaks them down so their base materials can be remade into a new consumer product, often of lesser quality.
When you upcycle an item, you aren’t breaking down the materials. You may be refashioning it, like cutting a t-shirt into strips of yarn, but it’s still made of the same materials as when you started. Also, the upcycled item is typically better or the same quality as the original.
Plain and simple, upcycling makes a positive impact on the environment. When you upcycle, you remove items from the global garbage stream. Upcycling, instead of recycling, is good too; recycling requires energy or water to break down materials. Upcycling only requires your own creativity and elbow grease.
Some of Hipcycle’s goodies for gift season include 25% of selected jewelry (through December 7), 15% off insular lighting (beautiful, modern lighting pieces made from glass insulators), and 40% off all fire hose products all month.
Fire hose products are actually made from discarded fire hoses. Four current products include an iPad sleeve, an iPhone sleeve, a tote bag and a messenger bag. Upper strong, these upcycled items will protect your personal items and start a conversation.
The Green Guru products are crafted from bike inner tubes, recycled plastic bottles, and wet suit material. These items are incredibly durable and well designed and come with a limited lifetime warranty. Selections include backpacks, messenger and duffel bags, saddlebags, wallets, belts and electronics cases and holders.
Housewear products include baskets, lighting, picture frames, doormats, and much more, many with the urban, industrial theme.
From bird feeders to clocks, whimsical to industrial, check out the coolest green products any green advocate will enjoy for many years.
