Upcoming War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemorative Events you may wish to consider

Do you enjoy visiting and/or participating in cultural heritage events commemorating points in our history as much as I do? If so, in the coming weeks, as a Heritage Tourist, if you are, or could be, in these areas, you may wish to consider these events commemorating War of 1812 events:

  • 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Lundy's Lane, Niagara Falls, ON, July 25, 2014. The Lundy's Lane Historical Society will be holding a commemorative service at 7:30 p.m. on this Friday evening. An exciting participatory event will begin at 8:30 p.m. from each end of the city. Starting points are approximately 1.5 miles from the battlefield and visitors will walk through the streets and converge on the Battlefield at dusk, following the old Portage Road like the combatants on that horrendous night 200 years ago. You will be involved in the remembrance of the bloodiest battle of the War of 1812.
  • 11th Annual Sackets Harbor War of 1812 Weekend, Sacketts Harbor Battlefield, Sackets Harbor, NY, August 01-03, 2014. This was the scene of two engagements in the war of 1812. Do not miss this Living History weekend. The past comes alive when the British attack - on Saturday and Sunday, tacticals add excitement and authenticity to the annual event. Visitors will experience military formation and drills, see artillery and tactical demonstration, listen to military music, shop for period merchandise and crafts, and take part in 19th century children's games.
  • 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Mackinac Island, Fort Mackinac, Mackinac Island, MI, August 03-04, 2014. Join the Fort as they commemorate the 200th anniversary of this important battle that took place July 26, 1814. Though the British seized Fort Mackinac in July 1812 during the first land engagement of the War, two years later the Americans bravely attempted to win it back.
  • 201st Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Stephenson, Fort Stephenson, Fremont, OH, August 02-03, 2014. To commemorate the Battle of Fort Stephenson Festival, Fremont is holding a multifaceted celebration with activities for all ages. This year's thematic focus of the festival will be on Native American culture. Tours of local historic sites and period activities will take place across downtown Fremont and Fort Stephenson all weekend. Period sutlers, crafters, and food vendors will all have lots to offer, and re-enactors will be doing demonstrations to delight the senses and help you step into the past.

Watch for other similar events as the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 winds down over the next six months.
