2003 NL Rookie of the Year, World Series champion and two-time All-Star Dontrelle Willis joins the Salt Lake Bees just in time for the Pacific Coast League (PCL) pennant race. The Los Angeles Angels signed Willis from the independent league Long Island Ducks on August 7. Willis pitched his first start for the Bees on the road, against the Albuquerque Isotopes, holding the Isotopes scoreless through six innings with five strikeouts.
With just 16 games left in the regular season, the Bees are making a last push for a playoff spot. Currently the Bees are six games ahead of the second-place Tacoma Rainiers, who are facing the magic elimination number of 11 games. Any combination of Bees wins and Rainiers losses that adds up to 11, guarantees the Bees will enter postseason play.
Hall of Fame pitcher Rollie Fingers will be the special guest of the Orem Owlz on August 23. On August 24, the Owlz will host their annual “Flight Camp,” a youth baseball clinic coached by Owlz ballplayers.
