Upcoming sled hockey happenings (Video)

The 16th annual New England Invitational Sled Hockey Tournament is scheduled for April 26th-28, 2013. This sport that was designed to allow participants who have a physical disability to play the game of ice hockey. It was invented in the early 1960s in Stockholm, Sweden at a rehabilitation center. The tournament reached its limit of 16 total teams in less than 24 hours. An additional 10 teams are on a waiting list. The tournament will be located at Amelia Park ice arena. The address is 21 South Broad Street Westfield, MA 01085.

Tournament ticket prices will be announced at a later date. However, the event is already seeking sponsorship from individuals and businesses. In order to be listed as sponsor, the minimum amount is $10 for online donations or $25 using the mail in form.

Need a sled hockey refresher course before the tournament? Enjoy a donation optional game between UMASS Men’s Club Hockey Team will be taking on the Western Mass Knights Adult Sled Hockey Team at 6 p.m. on Mar. 23 at the Amelia Park arena. All players will compete on sleds.
