The Salt Lake Bees play host to the Pacific Coast League (PCL) teams from Nevada this week, Las Vegas 51s and Reno Aces. With Vegas in town, New York Mets fans get a chance to meet a couple of former, and still very popular Mets. Former pitcher and Cy Young winner Frank Viola, currently the 51s pitching coach. The ever colorful Wally Backman is back for a second season of managing the Mets’ triple-A franchise.
For the next series, current Bees outfielder Tony Campana will face his former Aces teammates. In early July, Campana and pitcher Joe Thatcher were traded to the Los Angeles Angels from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Aces roster includes former Salt Lake catcher Bobby Wilson and infielder Andy Marte.
The Ogden Raptors wrap up their series against the Billings Mustangs before the league-wide day off. They hit the road for two games against the Grand Junction Rockies and come home to begin a series against Idaho Falls. Ogden’s first baseman Justin Chigbogu leads the league with seven homeruns and is in second place with 23 RBIs.
The Orem Owlz return home for a short series against the Idaho Falls Chukars before traveling to Grand Junction. The Owlz have the best win-loss record in the league (21-10) and are currently leading the division by four games ahead of Grand Junction and Idaho Falls. Owlz infielder Zachary Houchins continues to rake, leading the league with 31 RBI. Houchins is tied for first with nine doubles, tied for second with .590 SLG, and tied for third with nine homeruns.
