Upcoming Philadelphia Festivals for Film and the Arts

Spring is here! It’s time to come out of hibernation, clear the cobwebs, and join the creative world again. There are many exciting events coming up this month to help you do just that:

The University of the Arts, School of Film presents its Spotlight Series, which invites filmmakers, writers and animators to showcase their work. For over 30 years, the Black Maria Film and Video Festival has been a leader in promoting short film from both new and veteran independent filmmakers. This year will be no different, as this month 40 to 60 new films will be chosen to be featured at the festival.

The weather is getting warmer and more events are springing up outdoors. This juried competition leading to a free outdoor summer film series (from June 14-August 9) is now accepting entries from independent filmmakers from the Greater Philadelphia area. Filmmakers who reside in Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties are eligible to submit a film (FOR FREE! No submission fee) belonging in one of the following categories:

Narrative Feature
Documentary Feature
Narrative Short
Animated Short
Documentary Short

The Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts

The Kimmel Center presents the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts, a month long celebration of music, dance, and theater taking Philadelphians back in time with themed events. Throughout the month, there will be a multitude of free musical performances, great food, family fun, and more! The festival culminates on April 27th with a giant street fair from 11am-7pm, closing Broad Street from Chestnut to South for a free event for the whole family. Food vendors, artisans, street performers, musicians, and other exhibitors will fill the street to bring the festivities to a close in style.

Get ready to celebrate spring and the arts this month in Philadelphia!
