Upcoming live events: Week of February 17th, 2014

Last week in my write up, I advised you to check out the Dru Hill show at the Howard Theatre in DC. However, the show was rescheduled because of the snow. The show has been reschedule to this Wednesday, however it is sold out now. So, better luck next time? Either way, here's a list of shows to check out for this week!

Monday, February 17th: NOISE IN THE BASEMENT - Doors: 8PM/Show: 8:30PM - The Ottobar

It shouldn't be news to you that The Ottobar hosts Noise In The Basement every Monday with doors opening at 8PM. It's an event that showcases live Maryland music all night for only $5! Between 8PM-9PM Natty Boh's are only .98! If you're interested in who's playing, it changes every Monday. The Sunday night before 98 rock plays much from all of the artists that will be playing the event. This week there's a whole bunch for a little punk show. Also, who can say no to cheap show, cheap beer, and the awesome flyer for the show?

Recommended if you like: Cheap local shows and cheap beer

Bands: The Sonic Creeps, Clockbreaker, Braceface, The Melon Farmers, and Canker Blossom

Tuesday, February 18th: INTO IT. OVER IT. - Doors: 6:30PM/Show: 7PM - DC9

Evan Weiss better known as Into It. Over It. kind of reminds me of Piebald mixed with Vinnie Caruana (The Movielife, I Am The Avalanche) which is great news for me. Just not as upbeat, but the voices kind of remind me of all of them mixed together. Evan Weiss was last in DC this past fall with Hostage Calm and Saves The Day but hasn't been in the Baltimore area for a while to play a show, so it would be good to check him out while you get the chance. Even though it's a bit of a further drive to DC, it would be worth it. To be honest, I don't know why this show isn't sold out already but I'm assuming it will at the door, so make sure you can get down there early if you want to go.

RIYL: Midwest emo revival, Piebald, Owen, Mansions, and Signals Midwest.

Openers for the night: The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, A Great Big Pile of Leaves, and Makeshift Shelters

Wednesday, February 19th: TRANSIT: ACOUSTIC BASEMENT TOUR - Doors: 7PM - Empire

Transit has been doing the band thing for a bit now. I've been lucky enough to check out the band a couple times and they're great live. This upcoming tour they're on is actually an acoustic tour. The closest the tour is coming to us is Northern Virginia or Philadelphia, depending on where you're located. On Wednesday night, Transit will be playing Empire in Virginia, in the Alchemy Room. The Alchemy Room is a smaller room in the venue, which Empire itself is a pretty small room. Definitely an intimate show and this will sell out.

Also, when was the last time you heard from Hit The Lights?! This will definitely be a great show to check out.

RIYL: Acoustic pop punk, drinking, broken hearts and singalongs about it

Openers for the night: Hit The Lights, Brian Marquis, Front Porch Step, My Heart, My Anchor, and The Unlikely Hero

Thursday, February 20th: LIONIZE JETPACK SOUNDTRACK RELEASE - Doors: 6:30PM - U Street Music Hall

The name Lionize may sound familiar because they're from Montgomery County and have been jamming together since 2004, practically a decade later and they're still doing it! They're having a record release show in DC for their new album, Jetpack Soundtrack on Weathermaker Music which will be released Tuesday, February 18th.

RIYL: Clutch.

Opener: Delegation

Friday, February 21st: JOSH TURNER - Doors: 8PM - Strathmore

There isn't much country music going on Friday night. However, there is a show at the Fillmore with a few artists playing acoustic including Craig Campbell, Chase Rice, and Joe Nichols on the bill but that's sold out. Right now, there are still tickets for Josh Turner. I love Josh Turner's music and one day I will have to see him live. He has a deep voice and plays country music which sounds a little classier than the stuff that's coming out these days.

RIYL: Chris Young, Scotty McCreery, deep voices, some twang and some dancing.

Opener: Ruthie & The Wranglers

Saturday, February 22nd: FIRESTARTER - Doors: 7PM - Shockwave Records - FREE SHOW

Close To Home Booking presents a free pop punk show with other pop punk bands in a record store in Parkville, MD. Does it get better than that?

RIYL: If A Day To Remember hung out with Fireworks We Are Everywhere EP for extremely too long. Records, jumping, dancing, and feelings.

Bands: Firestarter, Over N Out, Heavyweights, and WATERMEDOWN

Sunday, February 23rd: CARRY THE BANNER - Doors: 6PM/Show: 6:30PM - The Ottobar

Local pop punk, with a touring act in the mix. They're called Bad Case of Big Mouth. Everyone else though is local and pop punk and makes you want to jump around. Not like House of Pain "Jump Around" but like, maybe Vanilla Ice's cover of "Jump Around" because it gives you more of a Limp Bizkit vibe? Because I dance like nu-metal to pop punk music.

Openers: Highest Honor, Bad Case of Big Mouth, Time Will Tell, and Something More

RIYL: Extremely early Hot Rod Circuit hung out with the Starting Line and Rufio was there for fun. Pop punky & riffy.

As usual, I have included a list of other shows in the area to check out at the bottom of this article. If you want me to know about a show, please e-mail me directly at missalexasunshine@gmail.com.

Remember when parking anywhere, lock up your vehicle and hide all your valuables. If you don't do this, you might be hurting yourself in the end. I feel like this should be common sense, but just in case you don't have that, here's your advice.

More advice, this is my opinion of where you should be. All information listed for the above shows was taken directly from the venues respective websites.
