Upcoming live events: Week of December 9th, 2013

It's the second week of December and Baltimore has seen it's first snowstorm of the year. Now, that may keep you in your homes and I don't blame you. However, you must know that it's going to be a crazy couple weeks of upcoming concerts in the area and I want to make sure you're all well informed. Now, I would not be surprised if maybe some are cancelled due to inclement weather but right now, all of the concerts I mention are still on. On the list, you will notice not only Baltimore events, but events in the DC and Northern Virginia too.

Facebook: Wax

Monday, December 9th: WAX - Doors at 7PM/Show at 8PM - Baltimore Soundstage

Wax is a rapper that's originally from the Baltimore and DC area. He has since relocated to California, so when he comes back to the area I think everyone should check him out. I've only been able to see Wax once and I'm unable to recall the set. If I was able to go to the show, I would go just to refresh my memory. Sounds like a good time to be had by all.

On The Spotify mix: Wax "Rosanna"

Tuesday, December 10th: NORMA JEAN - Doors/Show at 5PM - Empire

It's a little further of a drive than Baltimore, but Norma Jean will be playing a headlining gig in Northern VA at Empire. The band is currently on tour with Vanna, Kenmode, and The Greenery. If you haven't been to Empire, you should know beforehand that it is one of the smaller venues I've been too, think same capacity as The Ottobar. If I had to determine a guesstimate for how many people could fit in the main room - I would say somewhere between 400-500 people. It definitely brings an intimate vibe to the table because of the capacity and I definitely appreciate it. I haven't heard Norma Jean's name since Warped Tour '08 and I thought they had called it quits. Looks like they're still killing it and this show sounds like it would be nothing short of amazing.

On The Spotify mix: Norma Jean "Wrongdoers", Vanna "Safe To Say", and The Greenery "Acid Flash".

Openers for the night: Vanna, Kenmode, and The Greenery

Wednesday, December 11th: HOT WATER MUSIC - Doors at 7PM/Show at 8PM - Rams Head Live!

For the past 10 years, I have never appreciated Hot Water Music the way most of my friends had. Many of my friends thought I was obsessed with the band without even hearing one song by them, because all of my friends confused the band name with Hot Rod Circuit. Around 2010, after one of my friends made a comment to me about the band and expected me to know more to discuss, I decided that was it and I was going to listen to everything. As you can read, I'm obviously very late to the game. After listening to most of their discography, I settled with the genera public and believed Remedy is my favorite album by the band. The fall of 2011, I was able to catch Hot Water Music live at Gainesville, FL's renowned Fest (#10)! It was one of the most entertaining bands I have ever seen live. The crowd was insane and that could be that it was Fest, or it could have been that they were playing their hometown (Gainesville). Either way, the crowd went absolutely nuts when Hot Water Music was joined on stage by the Bouncing Souls to play "Trusty Chords" together, I'll never forget that night and I really should have jumped into the pit.

Did I mention, the openers for this show are O'Brother AND TORCHE! Like I can't even begin how amazing this lineup is, so hopefully you go just to see for yourself. O'Brother hails from Georgia, while Torche and Hot Water Music come from Florida - needless to say they came right to Baltimore in time to see all the snow! Maybe they'll bring the warm weather with them, we can only hope!

Moral of the story: I suggest you call out of work Thursday. This show will be insane. Grab a PBR and have fun in the pit.

On The Spotify mix: Hot Water Music "Trusty Chords", Torche "Kicking", and O'Brother "Lo".

Openers for the night: Torche and O'Brother

Thursday, December 12th: JIMMY EAT WORLD - Doors at 7PM/Show at 8PM - Rams Head Live!

Once your body has fully recovered from Hot Water Music and the PBR, you will need to make the same trek back down to Rams Head Live, so get used to the streets. Every time I see this band it just gets better and better, Jimmy Eat World is flawless. Not too mention, Diamond Youth is opening, which is currently one of my favorite local bands that have got their Baltimore roots! This show is NIGHT TWO of the HFSmas Nutcracker.

What you need to take from this all: I'll see you there.

On The Spotify mix: Jimmy Eat World "I Will Steal You Back" and Diamond Youth's "Cannonball".

Openers for the night: Diamond Youth

Friday, December 13th: GARY ALLAN - Doors/Show at 8PM - The Fillmore (Silver Spring)

Before you dive into this blurb, you need to know that Gary Allan is my favorite male country singer, so it will be no surprise when I tell you that you should go to the show. I've been listening to Gary since 1999, 14 years of nothing but love for the singer. He rarely comes to Maryland to play shows. I had never seen the artist live until last year, I made the decision that I was going to need to plan a road trip. With that being said, I grabbed a friend and we made the 3 hour drive to Richmond to catch him live. He did not disappoint. I'm beyond thrilled that he is playing less than an hour away. Get your cowboy boots on and sing sad country songs with me.

On The Spotify mix: Gary Allan "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)", Cole Swindell "Chillin' It", and Danielle Bradbery "The Heart of Dixie.

Openers for the night: Cole Swindell, Brothers Osbourne, and Danielle Bradbery

Saturday, December 14th: 24-7 Entertainment & Transcendent Events presents A VERY MOBTOWN CHRISTMAS - Doors at 7PM/Show at 7:30PM - Baltimore Soundstage

A range of local bands will be playing Baltimore Soundstage on Saturday ranging from Loving The Lie, Others May Fall, Bad Seed Rising and many more. You should go out and see what Baltimore local music has to offer. Don't get me wrong, I know there are many more local artists from Baltimore but just wanted to give you an idea of a nearby show. Not too mention, I think this show has sold me on the flyer alone. Who doesn't love a Santa Poe? You don't, then get out of Baltimore!

On The Spotify mix: Loving The Lie "Dearly Departed", Fatally Yours "Exit Sign", and Bad Seed Rising "I Won't Be The One".

Sunday, December 15th: MS. LAURYN HILL - Doors at 6PM - 9:30 Club

After looking at ticket prices for Ms. Lauryn Hill, I think $75 is pretty steep. However, this is Ms. Lauryn Hill we're talking about and I think $75 is pretty justifiable. If you're unsure of the artist, I need you to do some research. I've been listening to her for years, I've never been able to see her live and I don't know if I ever will. So someone please go see her live, if not for you, then for me.

On The Spotify mix: Ms. Lauryn Hill "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and "Everything is Everything".

If this article has told you anything is that there are a ton of shows to check out in the surrounding areas and that's not even the beginning of it. As usual, I have included a list of other shows in the area to check out at the bottom of this article. If you want me to know about a show, please e-mail me directly at

Remember when parking anywhere, lock up your vehicle and hide all your valuables. If you don't do this, you might be hurting yourself in the end. I feel like this should be common sense, but just in case you don't have that, here's your advice.

More advice, this is my opinion of where you should be. All information listed for the above shows was taken directly from the venues respective websites. Prices, times, and more can all change - so please check out the websites before heading down to the show!

The music scene is alive and well in Baltimore and you should support it!
