Upcoming classes at The Comedy Shrine

The Comedy Shrine in Aurora is reaching out to the Fox Valley community by offering five different classes for adults and children looking to hone or expand their comedic skills.

Since moving its location from Naperville to Aurora three years ago, The Comedy Shrine has earned its comedic credentials by entertaining others through stand-up, improv, and sketch comedy. Now The Shrine wants to give back to its audience by teaching the skills and "tricks of the trade" that make people laugh.

The goal of the classes is just to teach the art of stand-up and improvisation, but to actually train those that wish to pursue comedy professionally or recreationally.

Running the week of July 21-26 is the Kids Summer Boot Camp. In this week-long training seminar, kids will learn how to work as part of a team or ensemble, learn how to perform on stage, develop social skills, and even make new friends. Classes for ages 9-12 go from 11am-1pm, and classes for ages 13-19 run from 2pm-4pm. A performance for each age group will be held on that Saturday and the registration fee is $200.

Also for kids this fall will be the Kids/Teen Improv class. For $100, your child or young adult will learn the ins and outs of improvisational acting. The student will learn to think on his or her feet, develop a team player mentality, learn methods to apply to public speaking, and also to simply have fun. Classes will begin on October 9 at 5:30pm and will run approximately seven weeks.

Classes for adults are ongoing and year-round at The Comedy Shrine.

A Sketch Comedy writing class will begin on Oct. 7 at 7pm and will be taught by writer/director Nate Herman. Nate has been writing, performing, and directing professionally since 1967. He has written and performed with The Second City, National Lampoon's Lemmings, National Lampoon Radio, National Public Radio, and even Saturday Night Live. He is currently the director of Films For The Ear -- a production that stages readings of classic films like Dr. Strangelove. Classes for Sketch Comedy are $250.

Stand-Up and Improv Comedy classes are year-round at The Shrine on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7pm-9-pm and cost $250. Registration and weekly duration info is available by calling 630-585-0300.

The Comedy Shrine is located at 4034 Fox Valley Center Drive near the Westfield Mall in Aurora. For more information call 630-585-0300 or visit www.comedyshrine.com.
