Career services departments are in full swing throughout Los Angeles law schools. The career related events at UCLA Law is a perfect example of this. Law students at the school can take advantage of the following calendar of events:
Introduction to Public Interest and Summer Job Search: Friday, October 30
Government Job Opportunities at the Local and State Level: Monday, Novermber 2
Transitioning from Law to a Non-Legal Career: Monday, November 2
Government Job Opportunities at the Federal Level: Wednesday, November 4
The 14th Annual Government Reception: Monday, November 9
APILSA (Asian Pacific Islander) Summer Job Search for 1Ls: Monday, November 9
2Ls Talk to 1Ls: Monday, November 16
Judicial Externship Program: Wednesday, November 18
UCLAW Immigration Law Society: Thursday, November 19
For details on these events, look here.
Transitioning from a law career to a non-legal career and 1Ls talking with 2Ls may be the most intersting here. Focusing on non-legal opportunities for lawyers has been an untapped resource, even before the economic downturn and it certainly recognizes the present realities of the law job market as well. Also, of course 1Ls already talk to 2Ls, but are they talking about the types of things that will advance careers? Here, a mentoring type relationship is created, which is good for law school solidarity, something that UCLA Law is especially good at, and 1Ls get some real world and up-to-date advice on summer job strategies.
