With the fall season here, many record labels are gearing up for the 2013 CMJ showcases. A couple of which, including Topshelf Records, have prepared free downloadable samplers of their artists well in advance of the scheduled events. One of these events—a show that I myself am very excited about—is Topshelf’s CMJ showcase on October 19th at St. Vitus in New York, featuring the “Rebirth” of indie rock favorites The Jazz June, who have been long absent from the scene, and Braid, equally popular veterans of the indie rock and punk world. That particular event is regrettably sold out, but for obvious reasons; I mean, more than just a few longtime indie rock and punk fans were undoubtedly thrilled—no, positively overjoyed—to discover The Jazz June and Braid were scheduled to play the same upcoming event. And because of that, Topshelf has put together a free all-ages show to take place the day before their CMJ showcase, October 18th, at Suburbia in Brooklyn (no CMJ badge required). Performing at this show will be The Jazz June, The Saddest Landscape, Prawn, Enemies, Caravels, and My Fictions.
The Topshelf Records sampler is a whopping seventy-eight-song comp of artists, decidedly some of the more noteworthy indie rock, punk, post-punk, and hardcore artists in today's broad underground scene. Without a doubt the lengthiest and most comprehensive compilation release in quite some time. Makes sense that it is strictly digital download format; otherwise it would have to occupy three compact discs and be released in separate volumes or a box set. Definitely worth a listen. And for those of you who are true indie rock and punk fans, worth several listens, perhaps more.
Another indie rock favorite and wonderful blast from the subculture's past The Dismemberment Plan have reunited and are preparing to release their first full-length album in twelve years, titled "Uncanny Valley," on Partisan Records. The Dismemberment Plan are also scheduled to perform on CMJ's opening day, October 15th. Like The Jazz June and Braid, The Dismemberment Plan will be one of the bands you won't want to miss.
There are many, many other bands and singer/songwriters that will be performing at the numerous venues hosting CMJ showcases across the city from October 15th to October 19th. Check out the list at CMJ's website.
