Need a little vicarious adventure this weekend? You might consider going to see "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." I had the chance to see the movie this week and wanted to encourage those of you with kids (especially 'tweens), and those of you who want to recapture a bit of your own youthful fantasies to see this film.
The film is the sequel to Walden Media's "Journey to the Center of the Earth." Josh Hutcherson reprises his role as Sean. A bit older, he finds himself living in Dayton, Ohio, with a new step-father, played by Dwayne Johnson (the "Rock). It isn't the best of relationships until the two head off to find Sean's grandfather, played by Michael Caine, who has discovered Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island."
The movie is a non-stop adventure ride that makes the impossible seem possible. (I guess that is what movies are supposed to do). One of the more redeeming qualities of the film is the absense of any material that would make a parent uncomfortable about taking their kids. For those with younger children, there are scenes that might frighten a young child, especially an early encounter our adventurers have with a Godzilla-sized lizard. When you see the big lizard, you might take your little ones for a potty break.
If you have "tween-age" or young "teenage" boys, I should also let you know that the romantic interest of Sean (Josh H.) is played by Vanessa Hudgins, and although not inappropriately dressed, she isn't dressed like Mary Poppins, either. I loved Michael Caine arriving by motorcycle and full leathers at the end of the film. Makes me think I still have a few good years left :) All of my friends who were with me enjoyed the film, and as one of them said, "If I was 13, I would love this movie!"
