The UNL swim club attended a swim club meet in Grinnell, Iowa as they prepare for nationals in April. Angela Hensel, Patrick Luddy, Jake McClinton, Carter Blair Kennell, Kacey Christiansen, Cherie Oaklund, James Thomas, Karissa McDowell, Bonnie Kurtenbach, Devan Jensen, and Tory Fox made the four hour trip to Grinnell.
Each year since its inception in 2005, the swim team attempts to attend six meets throughout the year. This school year the team will attend seven since they will go to nationals for the first time since 2010.
The team practices three times per week for swimmers at all levels of competition. With 65 members they actively utilize all six lanes at Mable Lee Hall. Jake McClinton commonly brings home 1st place in the men's 50 freestyle while Karissa frequently does the same with the 100 freestyle. Christine Cullinade has made a name for herself placing in the top three many times in the difficult 100IM. Christine came in first place at the highly competitive Mizzou meet.
Georgia Tech is hosting this year's national collegiate swim club competition April 19-21. The UNL swim club has been fundraising for the event all school year. Some anticipated fundraising events for the spring semester include partnerships with local restaurants where mentioning the swim club will help them earn funds for the trip.
The UNL swim club expects to take 20 of their 65 team members to nationals. For many student swimmers the financial aspect of the trip can be daunting making the fundraising activities that much more important for the club to have a good showing.
