Tim Tebow was scheduled to appear as a special guest speaker at the anti-gay, anti-Semitic First Baptist Church led by Pastor Robert Jeffress, but Tebow has cancelled the appearance, citing unjust media pressure, TMZ reported on Feb 21.
A representative for the First Baptist Church in Dallas told TMZ:
“We are saddened that Mr. [Tim] Tebow felt pressure to back out of his long-planned commitment from numerous New York and national sports and news media who grossly misrepresented past comments made by our pastor, Dr. Robert Jeffress, specifically related to issues of homosexuality and AIDS, as well as Judaism.”
The First Baptist Church stated that Tim Tebow called Robert Jeffress on Wednesday evening to say that for “personal and professional reasons he needed to avoid controversy” and told Jeffress that he was cancelling his appearance which was scheduled for April 28.
Jeffress has previously denounced all non-Christian religions, including Islam, Judaism and Mormonism. Leading up to the 2012 presidential election, Pastor Jeffress warned members of the First Baptist Church in Dallas that re-electing Barack Obama would “lead to the rise of the Antichrist.”
The First Baptist Church claims that Tim Tebow told Rev. Jeffress that he would like to schedule an appearance to speak at the church in Dallas sometime in the future. The church was quick to add that “Dr. Jeffress shares a message of hope, not hate.”
