The regular season got underway this weekend for all the fall sports teams at the University of Maine.
Cassidy Svetek scored two goals to lead the Black Bears field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Central Michigan in their season opener on Friday afternoon. Annabelle Hamilton recorded two assists.
On Sunday, Maine got back on the field hockey field as they took on the #16 Michigan State Spartans. The Black Bears held a halftime lead, but fell 5-4 in overtime.
Megan Fenton scored her second goal of the game for Michigan State to even the score early in the second half. The teams went into overtime with a 4-4 score.Allie Ahern scored the game winner for the Spartans off a penalty corner just 1:54 into the overtime period.
Svetek, Holly Stewart, Danielle Aviani, and Nicole Sevey each scored a goal for the Black Bears. Emily Corbet recorded 12 saves.
The Black Bears women's soccer team dropped two games this weekend.
Brenna Brown scored a goal 5:26 into overtime to give Fairfield a 2-1 victory over Maine on Friday afternoon. Charlene Achille scored the Black Bears goal.
Fordham outshot Maine 16-4 and outscored them 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Black Bears now have a record of 1-3.
The Black Bears football team opened up their season with a dominating defensive performance in a 10-6 victory over Norfolk State at Alfond Stadium on Saturday evening.
Maine held Norfolk State to 100 total yards. Dan Collins connected with Damarr Aultman for a 33 yard touchdown with 6:29 remaining in the first half to give the Black Bears a 7-6 lead.
Maine extended the lead when Sean Decloux connected on a 27 yard field goal with 6:35 remaining in the third quarter.
