University of Maine hockey season ends in Providence

PROVIDENCE--- The season ended on Saturday evening for the University of Maine hockey team.

The Black Bears fell 4-2 in game two of their hockey east quarterfinal series against Providence.

Ben Hutton scored his 15th goal of the season, when he scored on a Maine power play to give them a 1-0 lead just 3:18 into the contest.

Nick Saracino scored two first period goals to give the Friars a 2-1 lead.

Derek Army and Ross Mauermann added second period goals.

The four goals was plenty for Providence goalie Jon Gillies.

The South Portland native stopped 36 shots.

Gillies recorded 34 saves in the Friars 3-1 victory in game one of the series.

Providence also swept Maine to end the regular season in Orono two weeks ago.

Gillies stopped 63 shots in those two games.

Maine finishes the season with a 16-15-3 record. They only picked up one road victory all season.

Hutton led the Black Bears with 15 goals and 14 assists.

Providence advances to the hockey east semifinals at TD Garden.
