The University of Georgia's beloved mascot, Uga VII, has passed away.
Uga VII, who just took over mascot duties in August 2008, died today of an apparent cardiac arrest in Savannah. Owner Frank W. "Sonny" Seiler was in shock.
"We are all in a state of shock," said Seiler on GeorgiaDogs.com. "We had no warning whatsoever."
"This is a very sad day for the Seiler family but also for all Georgia people," said Damon Evans, UGA Director of Athletics. "Just as his ancestors, he had captured the hearts of college football fans everywhere as the country's number one mascot. He had been truly embraced by all those who follow the Georgia Bulldogs across the country. We will miss him dearly."
According to Seiler, there are currently options for Uga VIII, but that will not be determined until next year.
There will be no live mascot on the UGA sidelines this weekend against Kentucky. Instead, a wreath will be placed on Uga VII's empty doghouse on the north sideline.
Goodbye, Uga VII; your work was short, but well-done.
