The 2001 film, “Beijing Bicycle,” is this week’s film in the Humanities Center’s University Film Series on the Chico State campus.
The film will play in Ayres 106, located across the street from Celestino’s in downtown Chico, at 7:30p.m. on Tuesday, February 28. Admission is an appreciated, three dollar donation. Prior to the film’s start, there will be an introduction by Fulvio Orsitto, professor in the department of foreign languages and literature.
“Beijing Bicycle” tells the story of Guei, a 17-year-old country boy who recently moved to Beijing to make a living. He finds employment with a courier company. The company issues him a bike, for which he pays out of his wages. The bike is stolen and Guei goes on the search for it.
On the other side of Beijing, a 17-year-old student, Jian, longs for a bicycle so he can ride with Xiao, a girl he fancies. When his father delays buying him a bike, Jian steals 500 yuan from him to buy one from a second-hand dealer. This bicycle turns out to be the one that belonged to Guei. Jian feels that if he loses the bike, humiliation would overcome him.
Be sure to catch “Beijing Bicycle,” part of the University Film Series’ theme of China and the West.
