Universal releases 'Your Highness' on DVD today, with an Examiner.com connection

Today, Universal Pictures releases David Gordon Green's Your Highness on DVD and Blu-ray.  Though the film didn't manage to win over a lot of critics with its raunchiness, weed jokes, and shots of Natalie Portman in a very tiny bikini (yes, we were surprised, too), we gave the film a glowing review here at Comedy Examiner HQ.  So glowing, in fact, that Universal ended up quoting our Examiner.com review on the DVD's cover-box.  Read on for the details, my gentle Examiner readers...

David Gordon Green's Your Highness arrives on DVD and Blu-ray today, and-- though you probably don't know it-- that's the best news to come down the pike in a long time.  Universal's film failed to set the box office on fire when it arrived earlier this year, and critics weren't kind to its pervasive bad language, weed jokes, gratuitous nudity, or its...uh...inappropriate puppets.

There's a good chance you avoided the film while it was in theaters (those box office figures don't lie), but that's where the "best news" part comes in:  now that you can watch the film in the privacy of your own home, you don't have to worry about the shame that might have accompanied purchasing a ticket for a film marketed almost entirely upon footage of Natalie Portman's nearly-naked rear-end.  You can pick up the film, head home, and rest easy knowing that no one will ever know your terrible secret.

In all seriousness, though, we strongly urge you to see this movie.  It's not the best comedy we've seen this year, and every one of the film's jokes don't hit their mark, but for the most part it's a very-successful, hilarious homage to those cheesy sword-and-sorcerery films of the 80's.  Danny McBride and James Franco star as a pair of mismatched royal siblings:  McBride's Thadeous is the weed-smoking ne'er-do-well, while Franco's Fabious is beloved by his entire kingdom.  When Fabious' bride (played by Zooey Deschanel) is kidnapped by the evil wizard Leezar (an awesome, scene-stealing Justin Theroux), Thadeous and Fabious must track him down and rescue her.  Hijinks and shenanigans (and, yes, a fair amount of gratuitous nudity) ensue.

We were big fans of Your Highness here at Comedy Examiner HQ (we "got it", while others seemed to miss the point completely), so much so, in fact, that Universal ended up using a quote from our review on the Blu-ray/DVD packaging for Green's film.  Click the "Slideshow" box over there on the left to see the DVD's front cover:  right there at the bottom, there's a quote from your humble Comedy Examiner.  Tooting our own horn?  Absolutely.  But you'd be jazzed, too, if your name was on one of your favorite comedies of the year.

Head to your preferred DVD/Blu-ray retailer to pick up a copy of Your Highness immediately, folks, and if you're interested in reading our initial review of the film (which we saw as part of a triple-feature hosted by Universal and the folks at the Alamo Drafthouse), you can head on over to THIS page.  Stay tuned for more on Your Highness, its stars, and the future films of David Gordon Green as the news becomes available.
