In 2002, Universal had a summer smash with “The Bourne Identity.” Starring Matt Damon, the film cemented the actor’s status as a Hollywood “A-lister” and essentially gave him back to back franchise roles coming off the successful remake of “Ocean’s Eleven.” Fast forward ten years and the “Bourne” films have grossed a combined worldwide total of almost one billion dollars, but as clearly evidenced by the just released trailer for “The Bourne Legacy,” a major change is on the horizon.
When “Legacy” sneaks into theaters this August, for the first time Matt Damon will not be a part of it, in fact as it turns out neither will Jason Bourne. Following the departure of longtime “Bourne” director Paul Greengrass, Damon declined to return to the role, leaving Universal with a difficult choice. Should they abandon the franchise or re-cast the role? In the end they chose neither option.
“The Bourne Legacy” will instead focus on a new character played by Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker,” “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol”), whose origins will be shockingly similar to Jason Bourne and who's fate its tied to the events of the first three films. Written and directed by Tony Gilroy, who in fact co-wrote all three of the prior films, “Legacy” will take the already established framework and build on its rich tapestry.
Judging by the film’s debut trailer, audiences are may not only be okay with the new direction, but they may be completely willing to embrace it. The new footage sucks audiences directly back into the world created by the late author Robert Ludlum, who originally came up with the character.
The trailer also reminds audiences that while Damon may not be involved, a number of other familiar faces will certainly be back for another round. Veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn will reprise their roles and new blood in the form of Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac will join the fray. All of this combines to a very satisfying first look at the revamped franchise.
“The Bourne Legacy” opens August 3rd.
