United Nations puts pressure on Vatican for info on child sex abuse cases

According to a Dec. 5 report on the BBC.co.uk, the Vatican is not answering the questions put to them by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. They were asked in July to provide detailed information about each case of child sexual abuse reported to the Vatican since 1995. The pope has announced the formation of a Vatican committee to fight the problem and offer help to victims, but the requested information has not been provided.

The unanswered inquiry is part of the ongoing UN inquiry which is scheduled to advance to a formal questioning in January. The Vatican has stated that the cases should be handled in the countries where they occurred.

The epidemic of sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church is of such monolithic proportions that it appears to be moving toward a type of worldwide moment of truth where a full accounting may rock the globe.
