United Airlines to begin use of paperless boarding passes at Denver International Airport

Paperless boarding passes have become more popular in the past few months. Continental Airlines introduced Paperless Boarding Passes for flights between the United States and London Heathrow. In addition Delta Airlines uses paperless boarding passes at New York's LaGuardia Airport.

Beginning tomorrow (March 11th, 2010) United will begin an initial rollout for paperless boarding passes at Denver International Airport. In general, the boarding passes are e-mailed to a passenger's cellphone or PDA and appear on screen as a bar code. From personal experience, security checkpoints, a TSA screener scans the code with a $1,000 handheld device, which displays a passenger's name and flight information for comparison to a passenger ID.

Concerning those flying United Airlines, flyers can get started by typing mobile.united.com into the browser on their web-enabled mobile phone or device. For additional information concerning United’s paperless boarding passes, please visit: United Mobile Services.

Of note, the TSA requires airlines to add security features to the electronic bar codes to help spot a forged boarding pass. The agency must approve airline plans to use paperless boarding passes.
