United Airlines flight bound for SFO makes emergency return to airport

San Francisco residents are learning that on April 4, 2011, a flight headed from New Orleans to San Francisco had to return to the airport in New Orleans just minutes after leaving the New Orleans Airport.

The United Airlines flight was said to be rocking back and forth.

San Francisco news station, ABC 7 reported that all passengers and crew on the flight were safe. Flight 497 had 100 passengers flying that day, according to a spokesman for the airline, Rahsaan Johnson.

Copilot Ronald Lee Young said, according to an Associated Press reporter, that the United Airlines flight--an 319 Airbus--had been landed with the use of backup systems, but that had meant only basic steering and braking could be employed. The plane has lost all its electronic systems.

The above news comes in light of Southwest Airlines planes which have recently been found to have had cracks in some of the planes.

"When things start to go wrong, there's always a system ... we can go back to," reported Young to San Francisco news station, ABC 7. Young reported that the United Airlines plane had veered off the runway and blown a tire. It was loaded with fuel.

Passengers were instructed immediately the plane was back on the ground to, "Leave everything (and) get out!" With those orders the passengers onboard used the front and back slides to exit the plane.

Ambulances were on hand to help anyone injured but most of those injuries appeared to be only minor with some people complaining of having received cuts from the slide itself

San Francisco residents can follow top and local news on ABC Channel 7. The news comes on in San Francisco at 9pm. San Francisco residents can fly to almost anywhere in the world from local SFO International Airport.
