Just as Delta Air Lines did after the acquisition of Northwest Airlines, United Airlines has begun the arduous and painful process of eliminating jobs at the former headquarters of Continental Airlines. The Houston-based carrier merged with United last year with most administrative positions remaining at the Chicago headquarters of the surviving carrier. As was the case with Twin Cities-based Northwest, several thousand airport jobs including flight crews, customer service, aircraft servicing and maintenance remained at MSP, but the administrative functions at the Eagan headquarters almost entirely moved to Atlanta.
United filed notice, as required, earlier this week with the State of Texas, advising that as many as 500 jobs would be lost at what was Continental’s headquarters by the end of March. It isn’t yet known how many of the remaining 2,500 positions located in downtown Houston will remain there, though some administrative and accounting positions will probably be needed.
Delta, as part of a deal with the State of Minnesota, is required to maintain a minimum of 10,000 jobs in the state for many years to come. This was required due to outstanding loans provided to Northwest which was struggling at the time to survive. At last report, Delta employed more than 13,000 Minnesotans, though the Eagan headquarters is no longer.
