If your family is interested in a different way to celebrate July 4th this year, check out the special events at these historic locations, all of which have a unique connection to American Independence.
Independence Hall – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
On Friday, July 8 at 11:45 a.m., there will be a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at Philadelphia’s Independence Hall. Although the Declaration was adopted on July 4, 1776, July 8 was the date of the first public reading of the document at Independence Hall. This event celebrates the 235th anniversary of this public reading.
National Archives – Washington, D.C.
Another public reading of the Declaration will be held at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. This one will take place on July 4 at 10 a.m. Later, in the National Archives building, historical re-enactors playing the roles of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and others will greet visitors.
Valley Forge National Historical Park – Pennsylvania
Valley Forge is an iconic place in American history, having served as the winter camp for the Continental Army in 1777-78. On July 4, Valley Forge National Historical Park will host a Community Picnic. The Declaration of Independence will be read and historical re-enactors will play the role of colonial soldiers and demonstrate what life was like for the Continental Army during that cold winter.
George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon – Virginia
George Washington lived at Mount Vernon for four decades. This historic site on the banks of the Potomac River, just outside of Washington, D.C., will host a daytime fireworks show on July 4, along with a reading of the Declaration of Independence, a wreath laying at Washington’s tomb, and a U.S. Citizenship Naturalization Ceremony.
