When the calendar turns over each year, fishermen, hunters, boaters and other outdoors folks begin planning for a new year at their favorite endeavors. The new year for many begins with one or more sports/boat shows planned within driving distance.

This year gets started with one of the more unusual shows, an outdoor show in a church in Trenton, coming up on Saturday. The Trenton Hunting and Fishing Expo will be at the Freedom House Church of God and it features one of the most inspirational professional fishing speakers you’ll ever hear.

Clay Dyer was born on May 23, 1978 without any lower limbs, no arm on the left side and a partial arm on the right. However, he has never let those limitations stop him.

He began fishing at age 5 and never allowed his physical disabilities to be an obstacle. He started competitive fishing at age 15 and became a professional angler in 1995, fishing on the FLW Tour for 4 years. He’s currently fishes the Bassmaster Open Series.

Dyer will talk fishing 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday and speak at the Church on Sunday 10 a.m.- noon. For more information, visit and for more about Dyer, go to

Dayton sports show called off

The on-again, off-again Dayton International Sportsman Show is off again; this time the decision seems to be permanent.

Once the new Dayton Boat, Travel & Fishing Show (February 21-23) was announced, Jody Witzky decided to cancel his March sportsman show, rather than try to make a go of a show in the same venue three weeks later. He said he hopes to be able to return in 2015.
