Unique DIY bedroom headboards

Handmade Evolution

For this unique headboard, the homeowners used a multimedia projector to superimpose images on this painted chalkboard wall and then trace them out in chalk for a dramatic statement in this bedroom. It looks expensive, but it really would be very inexpensive to do!

Create a dramatic headboard by hanging a large painted canvas behind your bed. Using mirrored folding screens on either side of the bed helps to widen the space, generate symmetry and create reflections from the artwork.

Popwall

Paint an accent wall behind your bed and mount a wall decal as a backdrop for a headboard.

Country Living

In place of a headboard, a salvaged mantel gives this bedroom architectural flair. To create this look, the more distressed the better, so don't worry about peeling paint or scuffed edges.

Martha Stewart

Create a headboard with graphic wallpaper by using the lines as your guide to cut out a silhouette.

Southern Accents

Create this headboard by using a shapely metal screen (this whole ensemble could also be created without using the screen). A solid-color block is painted on the wall behind and embellished with metallic swirls (decals can be added to create this affect). This effect helps to draw the eye upwards to create space-enhancing results.

For a new take on an upholstered headboard, hang a bench cushion by its ties from wall-mounted hooks. Top the hooks with a piece of over-door molding, which you can find at a home center. To create a tufted look, sew covered buttons to the cushion with ribbon, poking both ends through the bottom of the cushion. Pull the ends tight and tie.

When using salvaged wood for a mantel, make sure that the paint isn't lead-based (as most older painted things are), or you'll be eating chips and lead dust every night.

This is an interesting article, but I'd like to point out that most of these are not actually headboards, but interesting ideas for bed-area decoration.

Great headboard ideas, I love the way that some of these are not affixed to the bed but accentuate the bed.

Marvelous ideas, I would love to have a screen in behind my bed, probably mounted flat to the wall would be awesome.
