Etsy.com can be a great place to buy cosmetics, for anyone looking for natural ingredients and good buys, but there may be a downside. A recent New York Times article, brings up the factor of unknown sanitation that exists with handmade products. There is no way to actually know the environment in which the items are produced. An FDA spokesperson told the times that independent brands are still held to the same FDA laws for labeling and packaging, as larger cosmetic brands. Knowing and following the laws is up to the shop owner/maker, and it’s mostly a self-regulated process. According to the Times, “although problems are rare, they can arise.”
Handmade products do have many benefits, so one needs to weigh the benefits to the potential risks. Many of these handmade items are made with fine quality ingredients and made by people who dedicate themselves to craftsmanship.
Many people like Etsy shops because they like helping independent business owners, rather than giving money to huge corporations. Some find it more desirable to buy products from an individual person, rather than products mass produced by anonymous factory workers. There is also the ability to communicate directly with the shop owner to ask questions. As far as cosmetics and skincare products, many of the ones sold on Etsy have natural ingredients with fewer undesirable additives that can potentially irritate skin are are cruelty free.
