On Wednesday, June 25, a unique traveling exhibit called “Huellas en el Tiempo” (footprints in time) of 54 works from Colima, Mexico opened on the second floor of the Mexican Consulate. The works are the product of five years of collaborative efforts by the Colima Centro de Formacion de l'Artista graphica.” The program is known as “La Parota” after a huge species of tree native to Mexico and Central America.

The Consul General personally opened the exhibit with a 4-minute speech in Spanish welcoming visitors and explaining the collaborative program in Colima and the symbolism of “La Parota.” An English version was provided by Maria Esther Paredes Solis, attache for Cultural Affairs, for me and a small group of Anglophobes. In addition, two poster-sized summaries near the entry to the left back section of the gallery provide Spanish and English explanations of the exhibit.

The “La Parota” program features well-established artists who volunteer their time to work with students and lesser known artists. They agree to donate the first prints of their work product to the Centro, but retain ownership of subsequent prints. The display includes works from five years of classes. Altogether, 73 artists were selected for the project, but due to space limitations, only 54 are on display at the Consulate.

Because the projects were unique efforts and involved diverse collaboration, there is no central theme. Nevertheless, each is a good indication of the talent developing in the next generation of artists in the Colima area.

The exhibit arrived this week from Oklahoma, and will remain on display at the Consulate for until August 6. The exhibit is free and open to the public during normal business hours of the consulate. Visitors may enter from the regular entrance on Caroline Street.
