Union Street Pub helps define Midtown Detroit’s exciting character

Between the campus of Wayne State, the grounds of the DMC and Harper Hospital, and the museums and galleries lining the streets, the energy of Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood is definitely one of excitement.

That’s why Union Street is a perfect fit for the Motor City ‘hood. This more than 100-year-old building sits at 4145 Woodward Ave. – just a small jaunt north of the Mack/MLK split – and pub it certainly is.

The stylish and sexy interior has an ambience suggesting that one notch lower on the dimmer switch and you’d have yourself a night club – yet the food suggests a full-on and well-done pub, complete with Michigan beers on tap.

Regulars on that bar list include Milkshake Stout from Rochester Mills Brewing Company and Ghettoblaster from Motor City Brewing Company, along with a bottled selection of Founders Porter and Bell’s Double Cream Stout, to name a few.

A favorite on the appetizer list is the Dragon Eggs – chicken breast stuffed with gorgonzola, battered and tossed in rasta (super) hot sauce – atop a Caesar salad with mandarin oranges. The salads are dressed to impress with everything from a pistachio salmon to a balsamic steak to a taco variety.

The sandwich list is not to be forgotten, with burgers, a couple of corned beef selections, and even a portobello burger for those vegetarians.

There are only three entrees that rise above the $20 mark: filet mignon, New York strip, and seafood pasta (rightfully so), with the remaining choices ranging from $15-20.

If you can’t make it there for lunch or dinner, Union Street’s Sunday brunch can satisfy your cravings. And while their bananas foster & granola pancakes, Mexican chorizo bowl, and stuffed French toast are wonderful indulgences, the Sunday brunch is when you’ll want to check out the cocktails.

As if the bottomless mimosas and build-your-own bloody Mary bar weren’t enough, try the “Kir Royale,” a combination of champagne and Chambord, or the Bellini menu, featuring sparkling wine with a touch of flavored brandy (you pick your poison).

Beyond Union Street’s lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch, the pub offers takeout and catering, either on or off site, offering its streamlined pub favorites at just about any time.

Union Street Pub is located at 4145 Woodward Ave. in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood. The hours vary, with the kitchen closing before the bar on most nights. They can be reached at (313) 831-3965 or www.unionstreetdetroit.com.
