A Union County woman is in jail facing charges after stealing a brooch off of a deceased woman, Go Upstate reported December 9.
Tammy Renee Lloyd, 46, was arrested at her Main Street residence in the small community of Buffalo, SC. She was charged with petty larceny for stealing a brooch.
The incident occurred at a home on Simmons Road in Union on December 6 when Lloyd showed up uninvited at the viewing. Family member Dora Scoggins witnessed Lloyd stealing the brooch from the dead woman, and allegedly asked this witness to watch out to be sure she wasn't observed.
According to WISTV, Lloyd was a distant relative of the 88-year-old woman whose viewing was held in her home on Friday. During that time, the brooch, valued at $30, went missing.
The family was nice and waited until Saturday before reporting the theft to authorities. Lloyd was arrested Sunday after failing to return the broach to a family member.
Lloyd was a distant relative by marriage to the deceased. She was seen reaching her hand into the casket, after which the broach turned up missing. Lloyd stated after her arrest that she took the brooch to give to her brother.
The family made the decision to press charges after Lloyd created a scene at the graveside service.
Family members not getting along is more widespread than reported on the news. Nerves are on edge during this difficult time, and "black sheep" relatives always seem to be on-hand to make things more difficult. Do any of the readers have a funeral or graveside story to share with the readers?
