UNICEF is a fundraising event that has a Fall campaign that even the very young child can participate in and they have offered this opportunity since the 1950's.
UNICEF http://www.unicef.org/support/14884.html is a worldwide initiative that calls on children and youth to raise awareness and funds for preventable illnesses such as hunger and disease induced illnesses and to support children's education. (Think Malala)
The Fall Event tradition includes for some children, going door to door Trick or Treating with the traditional orange UNICEF box, which originally were recycled milk cartons, decorated in orange and with a hole cut in the top for coins or cash. Since the 1960's pre-made UNICEF cartons that are folded by the child and filled with coins have been the standard. Every year there is a new design. See the photo to consider the differences.
Those small offerings collected by children were then forwarded to UNICEF, to help provide food, medicine (such as vaccinations... think SYRIA) and/or books, paper and pencils for school.
This year, UNICEF has an additional opportunity, as more and more such fundraising happens through school settings.
Teachers are encouraged to enter the UNICEF contest, where they post an idea of inspiring children to learn ... following rules of documentation listed here in this video http://www.trickortreatforunicef.org/challenge. The challenge begins October 01, 2013, but submissions deadline is not until 2014. So, entries are not limited to the concept of the Fall Fundraising Campaign. The Teacher can win $1,000 for their classroom, but also can travel to the destination that their class funds was used to aid children, and then report THAT back to their school.
Involving children and youth in progressive opportunities such as UNICEF offers the child the chance to participate in goal directed activities that positively effect their same age peers world wide. Children who have a world view, and are invited to be world citizens have a broader expectation of themselves in problem solving and ownership of this Earth.
