Superintendent Erroll Davis announced on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, that 14, Henry W. Grady High School students and parents used fraudulent addresses. Parents wanted their children to attend Grady High School to play football. The investigation is ongoing and has been going on for several months and will continue. One case shows the name of a student who played football at Grady, but never attended a class at the school.
Grady High School Principal, Dr. Vincent Murray, is one of several principals that APS announced earlier that they would reassign. School officials and Human Resource stated that this is a normal practice to reassign principals for the upcoming school year. Principals reassigned will be on their campus until August, 2014. Students at Grady High School, walked out of their classroom protesting the move of Dr. Murray. This investigation may shed some light on the Grady High School principal removal and reassignment. It may also answer the reassignments of several principals for the 2014-2015 school year. Some school district employees may face criminal charges or disciplinary action once the investigation is complete. Parents can face charges as well as repaying tuition.
On Grady’s website a community meeting was held on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. At the meeting APS Superintendent Erroll B. Davis released the findings of the investigation. He shared the accusations of address fraud and the violations regarding recruiting of the Grady High School football team. Parents have presented fake leases and power bills. This investigation is ongoing and may involve more students and schools in APS. Several players used one address that belonged to an assistant coach at Grady. The internal investigation may open a Pandora’s box that will extend to other schools and not only in sports. Some parents use fraudulent addresses, so that their child can attend a particular school for academic reasons. Children first.
