The Louisiana Workforce Commission, otherwise known as the unemployment office, just lost their only “live” person due to the recent budget cuts that Bobby Jindal made. The Lafayette job along with 4 other “live” jobs throughout the state of Louisiana manning the telephone and desk at the Workforce Commission will now be empty. Now, this means that Lafayette residents and other residents in other cities will have to wait approximately 30 minutes every time they call the Louisiana Workforce Commision to check on the status of their benefits, to put in a complaint if their benefits are not correct and to speak to a "live person" for any other matter. All the other people who are milling around the unemployment office will not answer any of your questions about your benefits. You are handed a slip of paper with a number on it. At this time, it is recommended Lafayette residents continue to post and claim their weekly benefits on-line at the Louisiana Workforce Commission site. It’s a good thing Bobby Jindal made the cuts after the unemployment statistics came in December. However, the last noted written statistics were in October, which was 7%. The seven percent of people which are unemployed in the state of Louisiana is the size of Lafayette and Broussard put together. This is no small number of 143,000 people. Again, the unemployment statistics do not count those whose unemployment “ran out” and thus have fallen off the registers of the unemployed.
At the unemployment office, there are several people there manning their desks. One person, usually a newbie, has been known to troll the computers where the unemployed are filling out applications and looking for jobs. This person usually asks the unemployed person if they need any help with anything. The other people in the office have been known to:
- Show a person how to use the fax machine.
- Show a person how to copy or fix their resume on the computer.
- Fetch scissors if needed.
- Monitor the computers to make sure they are all looking for jobs and not playing on the computers.
- Fix the resume by proper formatting on the computer.
The bottom line is that the Louisiana Workforce Commission just eliminated the job that the person actually was observed working the whole time he was there and all of the unemployed will miss him. As a patron was overheard saying:
They just eliminated a job where the person was actually helping you.
At the Louisiana Workforce Commission, those who are there are not getting any help whatsoever as far as “getting a job.” They are getting help on “how to fix their resume” or “copying something” or “showing a person how to use a fax machine” but they are not actually helping anyone get a job. That’s on you buddy.
Now, the person who actually got laid off wasn’t helping anyone get a job either; however, he was helping those unemployed obtain their benefits. Now, it won’t be so easy to obtain benefits. You’ll have to call and wait 30 minutes before a live person actually answers your call, that’s IF you are able to figure out how to actually speak to that live person. The answer system is so discombobulated and ineffective, the majority of people haven't figured it out either which is why they end up at the Louisiana Workforce Commission trying to talk to ONE person who can help them at the office. Now, that person is no longer there, he was too helpful.
Bankers are loaned millions and billions of dollars to keep them afloat after they badly managed their money and the citizens are taxed heavily to try to keep these bankers afloat. However, the unemployed have to jump through ten hoops to collect the measily amount of money that they themselves have put into the system. The “injustice” of it all reeks and is responsible for the "99% are us Occupy Wallstreet movement." Perhaps they are unable to express themselves crystal clearly, however, they know when something smells.
