Unemployment insurance and ObamaCare on Congress' agenda

See also

On Tuesday, January 7, 2014, U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky put forth a Unanimous Consent agreement to extend unemployment insurance benefits so long as U.S. Representative Harry Reid guaranteed to vote to delay the ObamaCare mandate for Americans.

68% of Americans polled would like to see the mandate delayed and 55% wish to extend unemployment insurance. The most recent polls coming in on ObamaCare as a whole show 56-62% of Americans still do not like and do not support it.

The unemployment insurance affects approximately 1.3 million Americans and over 6 million have lost their insurance due to ObamaCare. In addition, 78 million Americans are expected to lose their health insurance when the employer mandate goes into effect next year as companies are expected, and many already are, to dump health insurance as a benefit of employment.

Senators used to have the right to offer amendments dealing with key issues of importance, however Harry Reid has now denied adding them to any bills before the Senate.

Reid has the 60 votes he needs to overcome any proposed filibuster so he is unlikely to acquiesce to McConell's, or any Republican, requests. The Republican Senators that came over to Reid's side to overcome any filibuster are Kelly Ayotte (NH), Dan Coats (IN), Sue Collins (ME), Dean Heller (NV), Lisa Murkowski (AK) and Rob Portman (OH).
