Unemployment extension 2010 has not passed and the deadline is today, Tuesday November 30th. As of midnight tonight the unemployment benefits will start running out for many of the long term unemployed.
On CNN Money.com this morning the headlines are a grim reminder of what today’s date means for the unemployed. The title, “Last unemployment check is in the mail,” says it all from CNN.
Even if the Congress gets it together and passes the unemployment extension bill today, by the time it gets to the Senate and voted in there, at best the unemployed will be looking at a lapse in coverage.
This leaves a bleak holiday season for millions. For each person losing their unemployment checks, there may be four or five more people in the family who were being supported with this check. The ones that will suffer the most around the holidays will be the kids. The first two million checks to stop can effect millions more in family members. This is not right, not in this great country that can bail out billions in banks, insurance companies, and car companies.
This summer's lapse in coverage went on for months for some of the unemployed as the unemployment extension was at a stalemate in the Senate. Once the unemployment extension was finally voted in, some states took up to month to get the unemployment retro checks out to the unemployed.
States fund unemployment benefits for 26 weeks. When that runs out the federal benefits kick in, which are divided into four tiers. For each tier the unemployed must re-apply for the benefits.
“The unemployed who have exhausted their state benefits are already blocked from entering the federal system in most states, they would have had to file their initial federal claim by this weekend,” according to CNN Money.
The unemployed who are already collecting the federal emergency unemployment benefits will not be able to move into the next tier unless the unemployment extension bill is passed.
Once the unemployed are finished collecting the remainder of the federal tier they are currently in, their unemployment benefits will end until a new extension bill is in place.
“The unemployed can finish out the tier they are in, but this has one exception: if you are in the last stage of the emergency federal unemployment benefit. The federal government stops fully funding this stage on November 30th, regardless of when you started this level,” according to CNN.
This is the reason people will lose their benefits at different times. If you have just entered a tier, you have a while longer to collect. If your tier is ending, this would be it for you until the unemployment extension bill is passed.
Each state is different, so it will be depending upon where you live when you will see the last extended benefits from this federally funded program.
By the end of December enough people would have finished out the tiers of unemployment so that 2 million people will have exhausted their unemployment benefits. The Department of Labor estimates that this number will grow to 5 million by April, if the unemployment extension isn’t put into place by then.
Connecticut is one of the states that will see their unemployment federal benefits start to run out on November 30th, according to America News Online.
According to CNN, 37 states offered the Federal unemployment extension, in which half of the funding came from the federal government, with the state needing to match the other half.

i have worked my entire life in the printing industry, i havent found one single printer hiring in a three state radius in nearly two years of collecting unemploment benefits-----i dont know how to do anything else and now i have reached the end of my tier, unless another tier is passed i am hoeless and comletely helpless-----i have never collected food-stamps or any other wellfare help, im gonna have to now so ------i am at a loss for words, i have worked since i was 16 years old and at 41 i have never been so afraid......
Sorry about your situation Robert! I got caught up in this mess last summer and missed 5 weeks of checks. Luckily for me, I started a new tier a couple weeks ago so I was told that I could complete it without interuption because it started before the extension ran out. I hopt that these dudes in congress does the right thing for us all. I know from experience how hard it is, but try to hang in there. May God bless you.

Nope you will be forced to find work - you will actually have to get up and go see people instead of sending out resume and waiting for someone to rescue you.
All I can say is "THANK YOU GOD!" Its about time some of these people stop whining about there being no work and do jobs they wouldn't necessarily want to do normally. There are plenty of jobs pumping gas, bussing tables, cleaning streets, etc. that you whiners are too good for. I don't wanna hear that "those jobs won't pay enough to cover my bills." Then get more than one of those "unfavorable" jobs. I was out of full time work for 8 mos. about two years ago. I collected unemployment for 4 mos and got back into the workforce doing anything I could. I delivered papers, worked on a moving truck, and bounced in a bar for almost a year before I was able to get back into my profession of Radiology Technology. No drain on society like my brother in law who has been collecting for almost three years now with no intention of getting a job. "I make more on unemployment', he says. Well guess what, FU! Now you gotta do something instead of taking $300.00 every two weeks out of my paycheck you societal invalid. That goes for the rest of you lazy asses as well who don"'t feel like doing a menial manual labor job. Get of your asses and get a job and earn your paycheck. Shame on you...you are one of the luckier ones. It is hard to find something in our area when 600 people apply for one job and you don't have a chance to even interview for a job. GOD took care of you inspite of yourselve. GOOD LUCK to the rest of the country.
i am 52 and i am nearing the end of a degree. i have been on ui the whole time BUT i have done my part, and i have the near 4.0 to show for it. we are not all lazy. i have been a toolmaker for 27 years during which time i have paid over 600 per week in big overtime weeks. i am updating my skillset and will be pumping more tax dollars back into the system. you are not funding the federal government by yourself dude

I've work since I was 13. Now from 13-21 not much is being made. Maybe a total of 50-80K or so...getting paid hourly wages doesn't get you far especially when it was $3.85 back 20 years ago.
As soon as I landed a job out of college, I was making 6 figures. I promise, I worked WAY harder than you. I GUARANTEE you I put WAY more money in at 35 years of age than this SBW guy has in 30 years. Sounds like you are one of those guys that has kids too early because your not too bright... so you jumped quickly into some easy degree such as a technician job. There is plenty of money available for anyone with a little gumption, a baseball bat or a hammer, and an ATM. You know people always talk about the over qualified that can't find a job cause of their over education, or about the ones in late age that are turned away for younger workers. I feel for them I really do, but even they will be picked over me. I have the opposite problem I am relatively young (30) and not over qualified, yet with the same result.... I can't seem to find a job anywhere. I have over ten years that I changed my life and payed my debt to society but when it comes to getting a job that counts for nothing. I believed that what I was doing was wrong and that if I followed societies rules I would be accepted again. Well I even believed so much that I married and brought two beautiful little girls to this world (ages 4 and 3). Now I was in heaven and the dream was alive till this recession hit. My construction job despaired from under my feet, I woke up and starting falling from the cloud. I woke up to see that what I used to do was nothing compared to the criminals that have the power and put future generations in jeopardy with their greed. The only thing is that I see my girls in the free fall with me. I just hope we can find a parachute before we hit the ground and my girls find out that the fall is not a game and that the tricks I do are not to entertain them but to save money. That when when I make toys for them for Christmas... it's not cause I am being creative its because we are poor. I have the temptation to go back to making easy money, (cause at least I will be making money) yet if I get caught I know what will happen (and the government doesn't cut spending when it comes to our prisons). I just can't believe an ex-cone cares more about his children and America's future generations, than our people that are in power that supposed to be the cream of our crop, our moral elite, our leaders. I know that you people see us 99ers as lazy but we are the opposite. Some of us fight every day to keep our values in place, our honor, and our dignity. In my community, there is no housing, very little sheltering,
no assistance, no counselling to even help deal with sudden

They don't want to hire you if you've been unemployed more than a month and if your credit has taken a dive since the beginning of the recession then you are screwed. It is unbelievable to me that the U.S. has officially made us all invisible. Well, when we have totally nothing and everyone goes into "survival" mode everyone will notice us.

It's truly dumbfounding to read some of the idiotic comments being made here. Those of you that are critical of the people receiving the benefits seem to live in a fantasy world. Try living on $582.00 every 2 weeks. If on average your medical coverage is $474.00 as mine is, that leaves $690.00 for rent, utilities ( electrical, gas, home phone) and food.
Now, when it comes to people being over qualified. The first time one hears it, one has a feeling of having acquired an education. But when you hear it constantly, it becomes unbearable. Employers will not hire over qualified personnel to do blue collared work, for one simple reason. They know once the economy recuperates a positive position, they will lose that employee. In addition, why would they hire an over qualified person if they can hire perhaps someone younger, less experienced for much less.
I'm 57 years old, have worked all my life, have never received any handouts from the government, organizations or anyone else for that matter. I put my daughter thru college without any scholarship and/or assistance from anyone, basically I have paid my dues to this country and society.
What is most troubling is the party politics that are affecting over 2 million people, and shortly 5 million plus if an extension is not passed.

You no some people are so selfish and ignorant! I started my carreer in college and worked in one field for 22 years!! Went into work one day and was let go due to this economy! I've had my share of financial problems but managed to have some money saved to support my wife and child while looking for work; however!!!! With all of my work experience I still can't get an interview for a job!!! Either under qualified or over qualified!! There are some minimum wage jobs that you will not get hired for if your resume is too strong! You people that have no compassion for people that are going through need to get a clue!!! You know where you've been but you don't know where your going & you are talking about people being productive citizens your the unproductive ones because all you care about is yourself and your own world!!!! There's people out here that need help and UNI is providing them with the help needed!! Not everyone that receives these benefits are lazy! If republicans and Busch lovers wouldn't have screwed this economy up we wouldn't have this problem!! My little girl died of heart disease (she was unisureable), 10 days later my husband left w our bank accounts, 5 months later I was layed off.
I choose to find the positive in everyday even though I know I how critical my situation is.
I am on UI. I have had 2 great interviews and shortly after was informed of a hiring freeze due to budget cuts. I contact them on regular basis and still on a freeze.

I'm an educated woman - paid every cent of my loans to get myself through college and graduate and work every day for the next 20 years. I was laid off almost two years ago due to the economy and because of where I live there are NO jobs within my field. So I "got off my ass" and did two things... I started my own business (which is successful and growing but not in the black yet) and started applying for everything from being a nanny to pouring coffee. Nothing. As soon as they see my resume I'm rejected. I think they think that because of my experience I might try to do their jobs better than they do. The fellow above who said that employers might fear losing over-qualified work force when the economy turns around also makes a great point. I hadn't thought of that.
I do agree that there are more than a fair share of people bilking the system but I also KNOW that there are many more that are just barely keeping their heads above water after trimming as much "fat" as possible. These folks deserve to have the government continue to assist them as they continue to try to make the best of a really difficult situation!
What do I do with my free time between applying for jobs and working my tail off to build a business that will contribute to the economy? I volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. I am grateful to have the assistance from the government and I feel that it's important to pay it forward in any way that I can.
I am a highschool dropout with only a GED and some college, never finished my education. I have worked since I was 12 and at close to 50 still keep working. I am an application engineer, selt taught with a natural talent,,,,I guess, anyway on those who submit resumes to jobs they are over qualified for here is a bit of advice. Dumb down your resume and try to customize it to fit the job you are applying for. It might help to land the position. God bless and I will pray for all of you.
