“Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn’t know you left open.” John Barrymore.
The talking heads on the media, politicians and the patrons of the local Starbucks are all discussing and complaining about the “entitlement society.” America has indeed created a culture of entitlement. Before your blood pressure rises and you scream at the computer screen or hit the delete button, consider the facts. Yes, unemployment, government assistance programs, and non-profit agencies to assist the homeless are essential. There are people who truly need and deserve help.
Colorado Wildfire Disaster Unemployment Assistance
Colorado provides assistance for those who truly need our help. If you lost your home or it was severely damaged by the wildfires, you truly deserve assistance. That help is available. Disaster unemployment assistance is available. Learn how to apply, reopen a claim and update your address in order for the assistance to reach you. Black Forest Wildfire and Royal Gorge Wildfire disaster unemployment assistance links are available.
As an employer, I made substantial payments to unemployment insurance even though the biggest issue in Steamboat was avalanches, not any other form of natural disaster. Employers pay the premium in order to help you get back on your financial feet. A natural disaster is not your fault; you do not control the lightening, wind, rain or rock slides. You deserve disaster unemployment assistance.
Company Closed or Downsized
You probably were not directly responsible for your company going out of business or downsizing significantly in order to stay in business. Your unemployment under those circumstances was not your fault and you need bridge financial support to assist you in paying your bills in the interim while you search for new employment.
You can calculate your benefit and trim down your spending to fall within the amount of money you will be receiving. Ok, it’s not fun to give up your daily Starbucks, lunch out with your buddies or even the happy hour chats with friends; when it is a choice between paying the mortgage and putting food on the table or social treats, my choice is clearly in favor of family. Be aware that as of May, 2013 some unemployed are seeing an 18.2 percent reduction in unemployment compensation. If unemployment remains at its current levels, this reduction in unemployment assistance benefits is likely to intensify rather than diminish.
Here’s the issue. Unemployment benefits were designed to be a temporary solution. You may not enthusiastically go from prime rib to Top Ramen. Making a culinary cut for a short time is doable while it is unthinkable for the long term.
Current Colorado unemployment numbers are 7.1 percent. That number may seem low unless you are one of the 7.1 percent. The Colorado unemployment rate has had minimal fluctuation in the last six months and does not show any significant signs of improvement in the immediate future.
Enough statistics. What are you doing about your situation? What can you do to assist a friend or family member in solving their Colorado unemployment? Note, I said “assist” them. They must take responsibility for helping themselves find work. Colorado unemployment insurance is paid by all Colorado employers. The more the employer has to pay out for the entitlement society, the less they have to pay you. Far too many have decided that sitting home on the couch complaining is better than jostling their well-groomed body out the door in search of employment income. Even if it is a temporary job with minimal earnings, doesn’t it feel better than asking for a handout? If your answer is “no” perhaps you are part of the entitlement society.
Helping with a hand-up by providing disaster unemployment assistance in a temporary situation such as the wildfires or company issues is valid and humane. Choosing to stay on the couch instead of actively searching for earned income is another matter indeed. Choosing the couch places you in the entitlement society rather than solving your Colorado unemployment situation.
If you would like suggestions and assistance on finding an open door to new employment (thus an open door to happiness and self-respect), ask me. The goal is to help you help yourself.
