New York State and Erie County offer a variety of resources for unemployed job seekers. Some are quite popular, like the Department of Labor’s jobs website, and some seem to fly under the radar. A prime example of these “hidden gems” is the Erie Community College One Stop Center. The center is located at 3176 Abbott Road (at Lake) in Orchard Park.
The Center can be used in many different ways, all totally cost-free. There are computers with Internet access, classrooms and meeting space, and computer training. The One Stop Center is a lot more than just a place to search for jobs on the Internet, though. The Center also offers several workshops, such as Career Exploration – how to make a career choice; Creating and Using E-mail; Discover – assesses a person’s abilities, interests, and values as they relate to work; Exploring the Hidden Job Market, and many, many more.
You can use the Center to apply for a Workforce Investment Act Grant, which provides an unemployed or displaced worker with $2,400 for a degree or certificate program. Many companies post their openings with the Center, too. The Center also provides services for youths such as career counseling.
