What does it mean to be Vegan?

It seems that these days the fad is for everyone to go on extreme diets. From juice cleanses to gluten-free diets, veganism is an alternative to eating healthy without neglecting your body of vital nutrients.

So what does it mean to be a vegan?

As opposed to being a vegetarian (which only excludes meat, fish, or poultry from one’s diet), a vegan does not eat any animal by-products such as eggs, dairy products, and honey. Depending on the extremity of the vegan lifestyle, one might also exclude, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics and soaps that are derived from animal products.

So why do people become vegans? Well, there are a variety of reasons. It could be because of religious beliefs, or concerns that are related to the environment, animal rights, or general health. But regardless of the reason, a vegan diet is extremely beneficial to your health.

There are an infinite number of reasons as to why following a vegan diet is healthy. It has been established that vegans are among the healthiest people in the world.

Following this rigorous diet exposes their bodies to less harmful substances, such as saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol. The minimal exposure to these ingredients is believed to reduce the risk of various diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. Following a vegan lifestyle can also help in an effort to lose excessive weight. The reason for this is that vegans usually eat a lot less due to an increase of fiber in their diet to keep them full, along with their consumption of plenty of greens and whole grains. Also, a vegan diet tends to stay within the government recommended nutrition guidelines.

The key to a successful and nutritious vegan diet is variety. A healthy vegan diet includes, fruits, vegetables, plenty of leafy greens, whole grain products, nuts, seeds, and legumes. All of the necessary nutrients such as protein, iron, calcium, and potassium are attainable with a vegan diet, but planning is a key factor – especially if you are new to this diet. This diet allows you to really understand what nutrients your body needs. The right planning process therefore ensures you get all the necessary nutrients to live a healthy life.

It is important to keep in mind that if you are thinking of going vegan, the change in diet is very extreme. You may always transition slowly, starting with one or two vegan days a week and after a few months, work your way to a full seven-day vegan diet. Make sure to consult your physician before making any extreme change to your diet.
