Understanding the towns of Pokemon: Littleroot Town

Now begins the journey through the Hoenn region, which is region for the third generation of Pokemon. These games include “Pokemon Ruby,” “Pokemon Sapphire,” and “Pokemon Emerald.” The trainer’s starting town in Hoenn is Littleroot Town, and it is one of the smallest towns in the Pokemon universe. The town is comprised of only 3 buildings and 8 people (not including the player and rival). The town’s motto is “The town that can’t be shaded any hue.”

The trainer’s journey in Littleroot Town begins with them arriving in a moving truck. The trainer and their mother move into a different house depending on the trainer’s gender. If the trainer is male, they live in the northwest corner of town. If the trainer is female, they live in the northeast corner of town. The house itself does not have much of importance in it. However, the player will be asked to set the time before they begin their journey. Time doesn’t affect nearly as much in this Generation as it did in the second Generation however, but it does do a few things. The trainer’s mother as usual will heal the trainer’s Pokemon when they return later on. Also, the trainer can put Pokemon dolls on their carpet after they acquire some later on (there will be an article describing Secret Bases and decorations at some point in the future).

The house opposite the trainer’s house is the house of Professor Birch, the Pokemon Professor for this Generation. Upon entering, the trainer will be approached by Professor Birch’s wife, who will tell the trainer that they have a daughter or son (whichever is the opposite gender of the trainer). Professor Birch’s child ends up being the trainer’s rival. There is another child on the first floor who simply asks the trainer if they have any Pokemon. Upstairs, the trainer can see a lone Poke Ball. This Poke Ball is the rival’s, and inspecting it will cause the rival to appear and meet the trainer. The rival then says they need to help Professor Birch catch some wild Pokemon, and goes over to their PC. Unlike the previous rivals, this one starts out being nice, and tries to befriend Pokemon rather than seeing them as a means to an end.

In the southwest part of town is Professor Birch’s lab. However, he is not there from the start. He will not be there until the trainer leaves town to the north and rescues him from wild Pokemon. Unlike the last two Generations, the trainer picks their Pokemon outside of the town, rather than in the lab. After saving Professor Birch, the trainer will be taken straight to his lab. He will tell the trainer to keep the Pokemon they chose earlier, and tell them to go meet May. She will help the trainer learn how to be a Pokemon trainer.

Littleroot Town is the first starting town to only have one exit. That exit is to the north and leads to the rest of the Hoenn region, starting with Oldale Town. As this is the only exit, it is obviously the way the trainer must go to continue their journey.

Littleroot Town, like other starting towns, is a very simple town. It is small and peaceful, with little influence from the rest of the region. The main influence comes from people wishing to speak with Professor Birch, who is the leading Pokemon expert in the area. It is a great, yet humble beginning for any trainer.
