The 2013 Denver Post Underground Music Showcase (essentially Denver’s answer to SXSW), officially kicks off tonight, July 18, in the historic Baker district, and runs through Sunday, July 21.
Easily the largest single annual music event in Denver, this year’s UMS promises to be the biggest yet: over 400 bands, most of them local, playing on nearly two dozen stages over the next four days. This year’s lineup includes many well-known Denver names (like The Epilogues, Bop Skizzum, Caramel Carmela, Petals of Spain, Rob Drabkin and many others), but also includes a lot of new names and up-and-coming acts like MEDIC and Sarah and the Meanies. Also, watch for revival acts like Nathaniel Rateliff’s Born In the Flood, and newer bands by established Denver veterans (like Navy, featuring Dan Craig).
It’s not just local talent, either. This year’s UMS features some great touring indie acts, as well as headliners like Mudhoney, Cults, Small Black and Lord Huron. There are plenty of extras, as well; watch for comedy and spoken word shows, as well as the ever-popular “The Sesh”—industry-related talks and panel discussions on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Music Hack Day, an international showcase for music tech, has also teamed up with the UMS to provide the first-ever Denver Music Hack Day, which will take place as part of the UMS lineup on July 20-21 at nearby Galvanize.
Another convenience for UMS attendees: this year, the UMS has an app available for Android and iPhone users to keep track of artists and venues. Go here to get more information and download the app.
Wristbands and VIP badges are still available at press time, and can be purchased on-site starting tonight at the UMS box office at 1 Broadway. Discounted rates are expired, but a $50 wristband for four days of music is still one of the best deals in town. Also, if you plan to attend but haven’t purchased yet, get to the box office sooner rather than later, as these can easily sell out. Box office opens at 6:00 PM tonight (June 18), with first shows starting at 8:00 PM. For all the details, visit the Underground Music Showcase website.
