For one weekend only, Los Angeles transforms into a city that celebrates the written word rather than the spoken word. It is a booklovers' favorite weekend in Los Angeles: The L.A. Times Festival Of Books on the UCLA Campus.
I have many memories of special moments at the Festival. Some of my favorites include meeting my favorite author, Frances Mayes. While she was signing my book I had the opportunity to tell her how much I had enjoyed reading and re-reading "Under the Tuscan Sun." I had Emeril LaGasse sign a cookbook for my mother for Mother's Day. I laughed out loud to hear the tales of Carrie Fisher in Hollywood, and I was dazzled when I met the talented and oh-so-chic author of "Devil Wears Prada" -- Lauren Weisberger. I've been to wonderful political debates and dreary writing seminars. No matter what your pleasure is...they've got a panel on it at the Festival of Books. And the best part is...it's all free. Except for the books...bring money to buy books.
If you go every year -- you know all you need to know. If you don't -- here's a few tips.
1. Wear your most comfortable shoes.
2. Sunscreen is a must.
3. Bring a sweater to wear inside air-conditioned auditoriums.
4. Consider packing your own lunch. (Food is expensive.)
5. Ditto with bottled water.
6. Bring your patience.
There is no greater pleasure than finding out that everyone else loves books as much as you do. Get lost in books this weekend.
