Undefeated HBU baseball set to host Northeastern

The Houston Baptist University baseball team looks to extend a season-opening winning streak with a three-game series against the Northeastern University Huskies this weekend at Husky Field.

HBU (4-0) has opened with a three-game sweep of Prairie View A&M at home and a dramatic extra-inning victory on Tuesday night on the road against UTSA. The Huskies will host a single game Friday, which begins at 2:00 p.m. and an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday.

On Tuesday, senior first baseman Mike Chamberlain delivered a two-run home run in the top of the 13th inning to propel HBU past the Roadrunners, 9-7, in a non-conference contest at Roadrunner Field. It was Chamberlain’s lone at-bat of the night after entering the game in the 11th inning and his first collegiate homer.

Through the first four games, HBU has a team batting average of .305 and has averaged nearly eight runs (7.8) and over 11 hits per game (7.8). The pitching staff has compiled a 3.60 ERA.

Northeastern (0-3) enters the weekend still in search of its first win after being swept by Texas A&M last weekend in College Station. The Huskies were outscored 23-4 by the Aggies in the series.

HBU will send senior righthander Ryan Lower, junior righthander Taylor Wright and either junior righthander Ross Kennell or junior righthander Curtis Jones to the mound for the series. Lower and Wright each won their first starts of the year, while Kennell and Jones each received no-decisions in eventual HBU victories.

Following the home series this weekend, HBU heads out for five games away from Houston. The Huskies will play Texas A&M, currently nationally-ranked (24) by Baseball America, in College Station on Tuesday, February 25, followed by two games against North Dakota and two against Kansas, all played in Lawrence, Kansas, from February 28 to March 2.

All of the Huskies' game broadcasts can be heard on or at the Legacy Sports Network website. Husky Field is located on the campus of Houston Baptist University.
