Uncovering the secret behind blue lipstick

Over the past year blue lip colors have been popping up in the makeup department. About a year ago Lipstick Queen came out with one called ‘Hello Sailor’ and this fall Revlon added one to the Evening Opulence collection by Gucci Westman. Why so blue? Well, it turns out a light hint of blue on your lips counteracts yellow and makes your teeth look whiter. Now these lip colors are not a pure blue. Most are sheer, treatment based formulas that you wear over your favorite lip color.

It Cosmetics has a treatment based version called ‘News Anchor Blue’ Vitality Lip Flush Butter Gloss. This limited edition gloss contains collagen, hylauronic acid, plum oil, cherry oil, shea butter, avocado oil, argan oil, jojoba oil and antioxidants. It goes on clear but infused micro crystals make your smile whiter. Co-founder Jamie Kern Lima was inspired to create it by her former career as a news anchor. Reporters and anchors used to mix blue eyeshadow with clear gloss and wear it over lipstick to make their teeth appear whiter. If you want to test out the blue theory – you could always mix your own as suggested by Jamie!
